Rhode Island is considering a suggestion that could ban unhealthy foods and drinks from being advertised at schools.
The state House of Representatives voted 62-8 Tuesday, to cross the bill. It moves towards the Senate.
The bill’s mentor, Democratic Rep. Joseph McNamara, says it supports a 2006 policy ending schools from selling soda and junk food.
Beverage distributors voluntarily decided in 2006 to prevent selling sodas to universities, but McNamara’s bill would ban advertising by these corporate manufacturers and others that offer items that don’t meet minimum national health standards.
It would prohibit marketing them at schools on anything used for university-related activities, for example scoreboards, athletic fields, uniforms or vending machines and through the educational time.
It’d exempt advertising features which are already a permanent installation.
